C.S. Lewis Shenannigans

C.S. Lewis is great, at least that's what my brain is telling me right now to type in this little text box I see before me.

I thought I'd open a thread of discussion about the guy, due to the interest... of... things.

I'm reading the Chronicles of Narnia at the moment. The language is a bit simple, but the story is great and you can sit there and ponder over the morals of each chapter for hours - he's really encapsulated the whole fable thing brilliantly.

"The Revhead" was saying that "That Hideous Strength" is a very cool sci-fi book written by Lewis. I didn't even know that the guy wrote sci-fi.

Anyone read the Screwtape Letters? What did you think?

Lion witch and wardrobe out as feature film at xmas... weta doing fx... check their site for video about what they're doing. the lovely ex-mrs cruise doing the witch thing... ... Interesting tolkien and lewis were mates but JRR couldn't stand narnia series, hated allegory, thought a good myth should stand on its own two feet ( assuming the bipedal nature of the former) i love narnia but am inclined to agree with the t-man.

what do you think: allegory or pure myth?

dboy, you have a filosofigal bent, eh? have you checked out CS 's ' Pilgrim's regress'? all about pilgrim trecking through a world symbolising range of worldviews. cs knocked it off when he was early 30s.. 'reckon there's a film script in there - maybe with a tim burtoneque feel.

disney does lewis? Arghhhh!!
I'm having a herbie goes to Narnia moment? Aslan sounding like lion king? Hilary Duff as Lucy? Double arghhh? I'm seeing the white witch, aslan, the four children, talking mice and fauns all hugging and laughing at the end...

Lucy:" Well, we all sure have learnt some lessons today..."
Aslan: " yea, Iv'e learnt that discriminating asgainst WHITE witches is racist"
Witch: " Oh, Aslan, and I've learnt that totalitarian, supernatural fascism doesn't solve your personal issues - it just freezes everyone else out"
( empathetic laughter)
Edmond: "And, and, I've learnt that selling your soul to the devil for a piece of turkish delight, and sacrificing your entire family for power is a bit iffy ... unless you get HEAPS of turkish delight..."
(more laughter)
Peter: ( wiping tears from eyes) Ha ha ha ... at least none of us are related to Reepichheep the mangey mouse, hah hah ha.."
Reepeecheep: " Actually, Peter, I am you father! Join me, and together we can rule the galaxy as mouse and son... You don't know the POWER of the cheese. It is powerless to resist...

Cue credits

You do realise Disney is only the money, and that it's being made by completely different people, much like Pirates of the Caribbean.

He's still funny though! It look sok, but it may just be nice effects, if they alter or destroy the story I'll be highly disappointed.

You are a crazily funny kid, Sam. That was flippin awesome.

I don't mind so much if Disney do it, as long as they don't do the aforementioned stupid things like include Hilary Duff. Interesting, there hasn't really been a precedence for Disney handling something like this project, so it should be interesting to see what they do.

Hmmmm... I think mayhaps that you might not be Sam Wynn, although you are from our church. You would probably be slightly older than myself. Anyhow, I'm just going to call you Sam :)

In terms of allegory or myth, I'm not sure I see why there isn't room for both, and why both can't be appreciated for what they try and do - however, in terms of my own reading, I gain much more enjoyment from discovering C.S. Lewis' recreation of the scriptures in fable form, rather than simply a good story that millions of people from around the world have created in the past.

I'll have to check out "Pilgrim's Regress", but who is this Tim Burton?

YOU DON'T KNOW WHO TIM BURTON IS?!!!! He's only one of the greatest director's ever!!!! he did "Ed Wood" "Big Fish" "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" (the new one), "The nightmare before christmas" "sleepy hollow", and a heap of others. Check this out:

Actually, that should be 'body' not 'bofy' slumping... bofys rarely if aver slump. Not these days anyway.

I agree, D-Boy that both forms ( myth and allegory) are enjoyable if well done, (like steak) but i personally prefer a good yarn that is undergird coherently by the author's worldview.Such a narrative gives us a unique insight into our own reality by holding up an alternative reality in which the choices and experiences that face us are mirrored... It demands philosophical and litrerary rigour on the part of the author.

Did I say that? Wow, that sounded SO VCE English! But then we Sam's are like that.

But I love the way the Inklings ( CS and JRR's mates) met every Monday at their local pub to talk about the world's they were creating. Any of you in the W.C.B.? (World Creating Business)

Who was that last anonymous?

At 1:09 pm, May 10, 2005, Blogger Dboy said...

Yes, who is this latest 'Anonymous'? Really people, it's quite easy just to click the little 'Other' circle just below the words "Choose an identity" and put in a name so that we know who you are. None of this "Anonymous" rubbish.

While the wit is distinctly 'Brent-like', I would say that the language used would have to be of someone more literarily trained at a graduate level. All Brent does is draw pretty pictures - he wouldn't know much about demanding 'philosophical and literary rigour'.

What is this "World Creating Business' stuff?

At 2:10 pm, May 10, 2005, Blogger Ludicrousity said...

Hmmm, is Brent likely to be offended by that?

At 4:15 pm, May 10, 2005, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey! Some of us don't want to sign up with blog account and all, but the only other option is 'anonymous'. annyway I'm not anonymous: I'm Sam, and Brent G and therevhead. That's pretty good for names! How boring would this be if yyou knew who I was, eh...
By the way, I take excepttion to your suggesting that I , Brent only draw pretty pictures. HAH! I use phrases like: 'philosophical and literary rigour' ALL the time!

For example: " Yes, my good man; I'll have fries with that .... but serve them with 'philosophical and literary rigour'.

World Creating Business? Some of us are creating our own worlds or realities in which to set our fictionaal prose. We do it with 'philosophical and literary rigour' - ask ludicrosity's kid bro when he emerges from subway....

Hmmnn, I'm beginning to feel that the conversation in these postings revolves soley around ludicrousity and revhead. I don't particularly like being marginalised by anonymous people who decide to exclude others from their debate. So here is the 'labelling process' in real life. Soon comes the 'degradation ceremonies'. My sociology book was right!! Oh, by the way, the C.S Lewis books of Narnia and the like are supposed to be children's books, hence the simple language. If he put in words such as 'antidisestablishmentarianism', the kiddies might have trouble undertanding it.

Stay well.
