BATMAN and a Question...

First of all this:
I can't WAIT to see how Heath Ledger goes at playing the joker. It's going to be hard to out-do Jack (kinda like Johnny Depp struggled to maintain Gene Wilder's standards for the Chocolate Factory getup), but if he brings his own manic flavour it could be one helluva ride :)

One thing I was wondering on my way to work today, what is the Christian view of gambling? I know some Christians do not enter Tatslotto based on principal, but then I have seen these same people enter competitions to win stuff. Is there a difference? Is the Bible explicit in its discouragement? Does it discourage at all? I'm aware of the whole 'drawing lots for Jesus' robe' thing, but that is neither contains positive or negative connotations (it's merely a fulfillment of prophecy).

Your thoughts?

Yeah, it looks awesome! And apparently Heath Ledger is amazing. Did you know Lachy hulme was up the the part originally. He was the front runner til Heath came along. Here's a photo of him from some testing he did. Looks cool I think.

Oh, and on gambling. I don't think it's wrong. But then again I think it can be. It's a long answer and right now I can't be bothered going into it.

Personally I don't like the idea of gambling. It's kinda... pointless. You throw away perfectly good money that accumulates over time in the blind hope that you might win it back some day.

I can't exactly picture Jesus gambling, but I don't know of any specific condemnation of the idea. What with the money belonging to God, I don't imagine it's what he'd want unless it's a one off fun little community thing.

I find it's just like Alcohol.

Life destroyingly addictive to some, and a simple pleasure to others.

Society would be better off without it, but that will never happen.

It's a bit more complicated than that, since there are so many different types of gambling, such as fundraising etcetera.

Kinda interesting how we justify the small one and think the larger one is useless or wrong though, hey?

Hmmm...

Simply useless or just wrong?

*shrugs*

I think Matt phrased it well. Like most things, small, rare occurrences aren't really that bad, but too much of it can be very bad.

I find it hard to see a defensible position for gambling. Call me hardline but i fail to see how it represents good stewardship (or any other positive value). Gambling is attractive because winning money provides a buzz. As far as lasting benefits go there are next to none. If you win small then you are unlikely to notice any discernible longterm benefits. If you win big then studies show that you will probably lose that money very quickly (and possibly more) through poor financial management. Material wealth does not bring lasting happiness, especially when it was earned on the roll of a dice.

Quite an interesting one. I seem to recall the disciples utilising the 'casting of lots' to determine the replacement for Judas following his untimely demise.

This is indeed a little different to gambling for financial gain, but none the less, there is an element of chance involved - or is there. Read Acts 1:12-26. This is a facinating way of making a decision! They prayed, then cast lots. This was their way of handing the decision over to God.

I have never done that, but maybe I should!
